Quran Revelation and compilation
Category: General

The book of Allah, Furqan e Hameed is the divine revelation upon Muhammad (PBUH) in the month of Ramadan. This book is the ultimate source of supervision to distinguish between truth and falsehood to guide Muslims on the righteous path. This book of Allah holds commandments of Allah that invigorated the relation of a creator with His creation. It is a word of God, which contains a solution to all problems and is self-explanatory. About the divinity of this book Allah says

“Indeed, upon Us is its collection [in your heart] and [to make possible] its recitation.” [75:17]

The Quran was sent down in the blessed month of Ramadan and was compiled after the death of prophet Muhammad (PBUH) however, the revelation took place in the life span of Muhammad (PBUH).

Revelation of Quran

Allah revealed His Holy Scripture on Muhammad (PBUH) via different means, either in from of dreams, signs, angels or direct into the heart of His messenger.

  • In form of dreams

Prophet Muhammad would sometimes receive the revelation of Kalam e Ilahi in the form of dreams as narrated by Hazrat Aisha (RA) the context of which is

“Beginning of Wahi began in the form of true dreams. Whenever the Holy Prophet (saw) would see a dream its true meaning and significance it would become clear by the morning” [Bukhari]

  • Through Angel

Most of this book revelation took place through the angel Gabriel who brought Allah’s words for Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) who later on used to memorize it.

“Whoever is an enemy to Gibraeel – for he brings down the (revelation)to thy heart by Allah’s will, a confirmation of what went before , and guidance and glad tidings for those who believe.” [2:97]

  • Directly From Allah

One means of revelation of Holy book from Allah Almighty was directly in the heart of His messenger. Allah has blessed some of His messengers with the glorious opportunity of direct communication that is why this book of Hikmat is termed as Kitab e Ilahi (book of God).

Quran Compilation

When Gabriel (AS) brought the verses for Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), he used to ask the highest caliber scribes to write it down on paper. Muhammad (PBUH) was unable to read and write hence, he had appointed intellectuals to write each verse that Angel Gabriel revealed upon him in order to preserve the sacred scripture. The people whom he appointed for the compilation of this book included first five caliphs and were chosen for their high faith and integrity.

The whole revelation process was completed in the life of Prophet but after his death, the compilation becomes apparent. Hazrat Umar (RA) made proposal to the first Caliph Hazrat Abu Bakar (RA) to compile this book and for this task, the youngest person who had memorized Quran in time of Muhammad (PBUH) was assigned. Abu Bakar appointed Zaid Bin Thabit who later on was appointed by Hazrat Uthman (RA) as head in charge of a commission to write six copies of Furqan e Hameed.

The compilation of this book is as per best guidance to the humankind. The compilation of Surahs is not in chronological order but in the order in which the Muslims can understand it well. Gabriel (AS) had guided Prophet (PBUH) and told him which verse should come after which in order to avoid ambiguity.

This book of Hikmat is the ultimate Holy Scripture in which all Muslims find their solace. The responsibility of this book has taken by Allah Almighty himself to preserve it from all errors and corruption. Allah says in His book

“Indeed, it is We who sent down the Qur'an and indeed, We will be its guardian.” [15:9]
